Rattan is one of the most important
forest produce next to timber. Dransfield
(1974) reported that the most widespread
taxon is the genus Calamus which is
distributed from West Africa to Fiji and
from South China to Queensland. It is
the largest genus of rattan. However, comparatively little scientific attention has
been paid to its cultivation and management.
